Australia Protests New Licensing Structure
The Tasmanian government has brought on the ire of much of the rest of Australia this week with the announcement that the Tasmania is fully legalizing the online casino gambling industry from the state and will be attracting internet gambling companies with a brand new taxation structure that has wowed the rest of the gambling industry. Tasmanian officials announced that online casinos could license and operate out of Tasmania for a one-time fee of just $250,000. That’s it. No other taxes to pay on the company’s revenue from the internet gambling industry.
Sydney officials are not pleased with the new announcement however and are quite concerned that the new Tasmanian licensing policies will undercut regulatory statutes in other Australian states. Specifically, many online casinos are currently running out of Sydney and there is a concern that business will close down their Sydney based operations and take all of the jobs to Tasmania instead; not a very positive proposition and one that has many officials and Sydney-siders angered about because the introduction of online casino gambling is still so new in the Australian market.
And the criticism has not stopped there. Welfare officials in Australia are very concerned that the Tasmanian officials are drawn by the prospect of money and jobs that the online casinos will bring but that there are no policies in place to address in impact that gambling will have on the residents of Tasmania. With gambling addictions and underage gambling increasingly concerns many Australian officials feel that the new Tasmanian policy is underdeveloped and hurtful to other Aussie states.
